September Pickups- T206 Hall of Famers!

Image
This month has to be the best month of card pick ups I've ever had. Managed to get two T206 Hall of Famers in Christy Mathewson, and John "Muggsy McGraw", the first couple of 76 hopefully!  Mathewson is a hero of mine, so this is a really exciting get for me. I was able to scoop up the McGraw on a random weekday night on Ebay going for way under what I imagined a hall of famer to be. I know it's a trimmed copy, but it will work for now! The Mathewson was a card I had my eye on, but was a little overpriced for being a card I wasn't absolutely in love with as a beat up copy. But the price lowered and I couldn't pass up the chance at my first Mathewson. Always room to upgrade down the road. How ironic is it that I was able to acquire the coach and pitcher without planning on buying either, for great deals! The story goes that Mathewson and McGraw actually lived together at one point, there is a great article here on SI that goes into more detail on the two. My p...

First T206’s- The Story of Doc Powers

Image
I will always be grateful for meeting some great folks at Net54 who helped me with my first few T206 purchase. Up to 32 in the total count and slowly growing! The plan is to get raw cards for all the commons and low graded SGC’s for the Hall of Famers. Something about the black tuxedo really excites me and completes the vintage look I’m going after.  Looking forward to slowly documenting this journey. I claim Doc Powers as my first card in the set- along with McGlynn, and Gabby Street portraits.  The Doc is special because of how banged up it is and it is a great first card. His story is even more interesting- he was a doctor who chose to be a baseball player instead. The story goes that he went to catch a fly ball and ended up running into the foul pole… only to pass away a few days later in the hospital.  Looks like Doc should have remained a physician, saving lives…including his own.
